Activities
Fishing:
There is extensive trout and salmon fishing in and around Loch Tay and its main tributaries, the rivers Dochart and Lochay, both of which run through the village. Trout fishing permits are available from the village newsagent. Salmon fishing is available by private arrangement, and should be booked in advance.
Golf:
There is a spectacular, highland nine-hole golf course on the edge of the village. The clubhouse has a licensed bar and restaurant, and a shop where visitors can buy or hire equipment. Individual round, day and weekly tickets are available.
Walks:
In addition to a network of low level walks and public footpaths connecting Killin with the western end of Loch Tay, there are numerous forest and river trails either radiating from the village or within easy reach. For the more adventurous, there are several 'Munroes' overlooking Killin, including Ben Lawers, Ben Glass and a string of interconnected peaks known as the Tarmachan Ridge. The Ben Lawers Visitor Centre is a popular starting point for walks in the Ben Lawers nature reserve.
Sport and Leisure:
The village has an all-weather tennis court which can also be used for basketball and five-a-side football. There is a public park with children's play area, a putting green and a bowling green. All necessary equipment can be hired from the pavilion, which also has showers and changing facilities. The Killin Outdoor Centre hires a range of equipment, including canoes and mountain bikes, and there are watersport centres nearby; at Croft-na-Caber on Loch Tay, and at Lochearnhead.
Places of Interest:
The village tourist office is located at the head of the village, overlooking the Falls of Dochart. It is housed in a converted mill and has a restored waterwheel. Upstairs, there is a permanent exhibition of Killin's history and heritage. Nearby, there is a circle of standing stones, and an ancient clan graveyard situated on an island in the middle of the River Dochart. Just outside the village there is a restored 'longhouse', and the ruins of Finlarig Castle, a Campbell stronghold, with a hanging tree and beheading pit.
Hotels, Shops and Restaurants:
There are five family-run hotels in the village, and three restaurants. The village has two general grocers, a newsagent which sells fishing tackle, an ironmonger, a laundrette, and several craft, antique and souvenir shops. There is also a local library, a doctors' surgery, a police station and a mountain rescue station.
